Launch Event for Renewables Readiness Assessment for the Kyrgyz Republic
Having set a goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 44% by 2030 and to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, the Kyrgyz Republic recognises that renewables – primarily hydropower – will be the driver of zero-carbon policies, given their enormous potential in the country.
This report developed by the Ministry of Energy of the Kyrgyz Republic with the support of IRENA and UNDP aims to further assist the country on this path towards the sustainable development of the energy sector through increasing deployment of reliable and cost-effective renewable energy solutions.
The RRA calls for more ambitious and coherent renewable targets, combined with long term vision for development of the sector. Implementation of well designed and suitable for local conditions auctions is highlighted as the necessary way forward for achievement of well-planned and cost-efficient renewable energy deployment and for attracting new investments, while reducing the perceived market risk. Further improvement of financial and de-risking instruments is also recommended, as well as actions for harnessing renewable energy potential in heating.
At the launch event, the main findings and recommendations will be shared with the participants. Additionally, the event will provide a platform for a discussion among development partners and key stakeholders on the prospects for accelerating the deployment of renewable energy in the Kyrgyz Republic. Throughout the previous Consultation and Validation Workshops, IRENA received inputs from different stakeholders on the recommended actions and incorporated them in the final report.
